Global Marine Group consists of four main brands – Global Marine, CWind, Global Offshore and OceanIQ – as well as having many partnerships globally:

  • Global Marine provide fibre optic solutions, including cable installation and maintenance for the telecommunications and oil and gas sectors.
  • CWind provide topside, splash zone, and subsea engineering services to the offshore renewables and utilities market.
  • Global Offshore provide cable installation, repair, and trenching services to the offshore, renewables, utilities, and oil and gas markets.
  • OceanIQ provide subsea cable data, surveys, and route engineering solutions to the telecoms, utilities, renewables, and oil and gas markets.

  • What was the challenge?

    These requirements sometimes demand teams to be deployed at short notice to work on a project under very tight timescales.

    This has been an ongoing challenge due to mobilisation issues relating to local immigration and employment laws. Since Brexit, GMG have faced unique challenges regarding the movement of their project teams across Europe and into the North Sea.

    IR35 has also played a part in the legislative challenges faced when recruiting UK-based Limited Company specialist workers for projects in the UK and offshore, as well as the associated end user of labour responsibilities.

  • Characteristics of our solution

    We have agreed a three-year deal to provide a managed service across the group after a successful implementation within CWind. This solution provides advice and guidance regarding GMG’s obligations as the end user of labour for UK-based Limited Company workers, both onshore and offshore.

    The group has full access to our IR35 portal, allowing them to complete IR35 determinations, whilst taking reasonable care in doing so. This demonstrates our ‘partner over provider’ approach to our MSP solution.

    Through our panel of immigration, employment, and compliance specialists, we have been able to offer project deployment advice relating to both VISA and local social security and taxation. This guidance has been invaluable for Global Marine Group projects and, again, has provided a long-term, sustainable solution to existing and potential future issues.

  • Outcomes and benefits

    We have become a critical partner to Global Marine Group, assisting them to staff their projects. By early 2022, we issued 546 contracts to workers whilst facilitating IR35 determinations for GMG’s contractors, using software to demonstrate reasonable care at every stage of the process. This was a fully compliant service that we delivered to all contractors and Hiring Managers, saving GMG both time and money.

    We fully integrated ourselves into GMG’s existing resourcing team, working alongside them to review their onboarding process. Rather than looking to replace the team, we equipped them with long-term skills and processes for their future hires. Our solution goes beyond providing transactional recruitment services and is a genuine partnership at every stage.
